Anna’s Top 5 Summer Drink Picks! (GF)
I love how Live Free is also a journey of the world getting to know me as I get to know myself. I have so much to share I am so excited.
Top 5 Summer Drink Picks
Today I want to share with everyone my favourite summer drink picks. If you know me I have a side/secret passion or I guess guilty pleasure of bartending and a strong appreciation of alcohol. Not that I am alcoholic or drink often at all but I have a love for the art, the science, the fun and the taste behind it all. Making your own recipe, experimenting, tossing bottles, mixology, real cocktails, flair, that refreshing first sip, even the different kinds of ice cubes. For some reason, my eyes just turn into hearts.
I have years of experience in food and beverage, some short but amazing experience in bartending and graduated college for a diploma in hospitality. I now work hands on in food & beverage in large scale and small events and bistros every single day at one of Niagara’s leading event centres, we have a focus on weddings and so you can guess, lots of food and lots of beverage for a lot of people. I absolutely love my current job and all my side hobbies and feel really good about where I am currently. It also gives me time and motivation to focus on the things I love – Live Free and all my other passions.
Enough chit chat, let’s talk drinks!!! It’s the start of a very hot summer and everyone loves a refreshing cold one but being gluten-free/celiac or if you struggle with any kind of sensitivity to ingredients of alcohol you do have to be a bit more picky. It took me years to get to a point where I felt confident in my alcohol choices that it wouldn’t make me sick and I could enjoy myself. I learned the hard way unfortunately about gluten in some drinks and got very ill for three days straight at a younger age. At the time I started drinking there was not much info online about gluten-free alcohols and it seemed like it was a grey area (still is to be honest), nothing was concrete and no one really knew what was happening with grains in the alcohol process,
Now most alcoholic brands have stepped up to the plate, replying to emails for concerns from gluten-freeaks about gluten in their products, offering educated information, their alcohol process and ingredient lists on their websites, and best of all – even advertising GF on the bottles. Ease of mind and a very easy pick up in the ol’ Canadian LCBO. Not all brands have done this but we are getting there. There are definitely a lot of great choices of refreshments out there for this summer.
Thornbury actually advertises gluten-free on their label. Most ciders are gluten-safe as it is apple based but seeing it makes life easy. I’m a big cider girl. I love it all. But this cranberry one has a refreshing summer-y taste with a sweet pucker against your cheeks and a smooth berry taste. The carbonation is just where it needs to be for cider. Not too much, not too little. Thornbury really killed it on this one.
2. YES, I AM A ROSÉ GIRL. TYPICAL RIGHT? BUT JACOB’S CREEK WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE IN MY HEART WITH THEIR MOSCATO ROSÉ.
Not only am I a rosé girl but I am a wine girl. Funny though, growing up I HATED wine until I took a wine tasting class in college that taught me so much about wine and how incredible it can be. As pink and sparkly this wine is, the taste and bubbles won my heart over and it is always my go-to summer wine and day drink. It goes down easy, quenches your thirst and keeps you smiling. It’s the perfect mix of sparkles and rosé for the tom-boy girlie-girl I am… Can you even be both? I don’t know but I am going to be both because its more fun that way. If you love bubbles and an easy drink – this is the one for you.
3. ANOTHER WINE. I KNOW, I KNOW. BUT I WAS SERIOUS – I LOVE WINE NOW… I AM 100% A WINE GIRL. BAREFOOT MOSCATO WAS RECOMMENDED BY A FRIEND AND IS THE PERFECT WINE TO HAVE BY THE POOL WITH YOUR BEST GIRLFRIENDS, OR GUY FRIENDS. YOU DO YOU.
I am so lame talking about Moscato’s as my go-to wines but for summer Moscato’s are so great and fun. And pretty – yes wine can be pretty, trust me. This citrusy moscato has hints of peach and a fruity apricot flavour that tastes great while you’re working on your tan. I found this Moscato makes an easy summer party drink as well. Throw in some pink lemonade and sprite and you have a quick and delicious spritzer, add some raspberries and you have an easier 4 ingredient Sangria, top it off with some vodka and you’re totally winning as the best party host of the summer.
4. MY CURRENT SUMMER GO-TO COOLER IS JAW DROP’S FLASHING PEACHES.
I find that gluten-free coolers is not the easiest thing in the world to find but I recently got confirmation that Jaw Drop coolers are gluten-safe and was very angry nobody told me how DELICIOUS and refreshing they are. I mean at 7% in tall cans, they’re dangerous and you can literally drink them like juice. For summer, the peach one is by far standing front stage. It’s like biting into a peach right off the branch, juicy, ripe, mouth-watering and energizing. You can easily down 4 very quickly but trust me – from experience don’t down them too quickly! Haha.
I am a big liquor girl. I love cocktails and experimenting with recipes but I am always sure to make sure the liquors I am using/drinking are gluten-free as when they’re not there is a lot of pain! I had been hearing about Stoli vodka for a while but hadn’t gotten the chance to try it until it was on sale at the LCBO the other day. Quickly it is now a favourite! I am a big vodka girl as I love how easy it is to add into recipes and how smooth it can taste if you find the right one. Stoli has taken the cake especially over the typical GF classic Smirnoff which is normally my safe and alright go-to, and against Tito’s which is my favourite more expensive vodka, Stoli meets in the middle and cannot be underrated. Stoli will quickly be a household staple this summer especially after having incredible flavours like the crushed mango that makes a great beach drink mixing with lemonade and some ice.
That’s it! My top GF reco’s for this summer. Try them and let me know what you think! Also, what else do I need to try? Let me know what you’re drinking and let’s find more Moscato!!!
Happy Summer Loves!
